Every year we welcome hundreds of families to our campsite. Many are visiting the area for the first time and keen to know what the best family days out in Dorset are. Here we have showcased 11 great attractions all of which are within a one hour drive of our award-winning holiday park. The perfect activities to do during a family camping, caravan or glamping holiday at South Lytchett.

Monkey World

The Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre is a 65-acre ape and monkey sanctuary and rescue centre near Wool. Set up in 1987 it is a great family day out in Dorset.

There are lots of different species apes and monkeys to see and interact with, many of which have been recused from around the globe.

Monkey World assists governments around the world to stop the smuggling of primates from the wild. At the Centre refugees of this illegal trade as well as those that have suffered abuse or neglect are rehabilitated into natural living groups.

Having been featured in many TV series and documentaries over the years, the centre is well known for the care they can provide in rehabilitating animals.

There is also a large climbing frame area allowing you to set your own monkeys free and burn of some energy!

Go Coasteering in Purbeck!

As well as being stunningly beautiful the coastline near to South Lytchett Manor is a fantastic area for watersports. One of the most exciting and exhilarating activities to take part in is coasteering. This involves donning a wetsuit plus other protective equipment and jumping into the clear seas from the ledges and cliffs.

Cumulus Outdoors is the nearest company to us which offers this activity. The experienced guides have safety at the top of their agenda however this is closely followed by fun! They will take you to some rugged coastal areas in along the Isle of Purbeck and give you confidence to jump into the water from any height you feel comfortable with.

Oceanarium – Bournemouth Aquarium

Another way to enjoy the wonders of the sea but stay (mainly) dry at the same time is by visiting The Oceanarium in Bournemouth. It is centrally located right on the seafront near the BIC and offers visitors a journey around the waters of the world.

Watch the loveable penguins at feeding time both above and below the waterline. Then head over to experience the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef section with the Blacktip Reef Sharks!

There’s also a kids play zone, otter oasis and crocodile rocks area.

Peppa Pig World

Okay so, Peppa Pig World is actually in Hampshire, however it is still only around 1 hour away from our campsite in Dorset.

Paultons Family Theme Park is the home of Peppa Pig World. It is located in the village of Ower, near Romsey. The popular theme park has 70 rides and attractions. Jump in for a car ride with Daddy Pig, fly the clouds of the Windy Castle or take a flight on Miss Rabbits Helicopter.

Farmer Palmer’s

Just 5 minutes away from us is the wonderful Farmer Palmer’s, a family friendly farm. The Park is packed with fun-filled attractions and lots of cute and friendly animals!

Their attractions are designed specifically with under 8’s in mind and are guaranteed to keep your little ones entertained throughout your stay. They have a mix of indoor and outdoor play giving all the benefits of fresh air and exercise, whatever the weather.

Tower Park

Another action packed location that is not far from us is Tower Park which offers some of the best family days out in Dorset. The site has a great variety of activities for the whole family. As many of the attractions are indoors it is a has some greats things to do in Poole when it’s raining.

On you marks. Get set. Bowl! Go ten pin bowling at Hollywood Bowl. They’ve got a brilliant entertainment package for all the family – including kids big and small!

Splashdown! Experience the thrill of the many water flumes, pools and shoots at this great water park. There’s something for everyone – from big kids to little ones – with some of the UK’s most exciting water flumes. There’s a beginners flume for the younger kids, a shallow splash pool and even somewhere to play out of the water.

At Cineworld you can catch the latest box office releases in the modern and comfortable surroundings on offer. Cineworld pride themselves on outstanding picture quality and atmospheric surround sound; the soft, deep-down comfort of the modern seating; the crunch of the popcorn; and, most importantly, the friendliest customer service around.

There is also a host of places to eat with fast food favourites alongside some big chain restaurant names.

Swanage Railway

Step back in time and take a trip on the Swanage Railway, a steam powered train which runs on the Purbeck line. Visitors can experience a unique journey through six miles of beautiful scenery passing the magnificent ruins of Corfe Castle, travelling down to the blue flag beach at Swanage.

Weaving its way through the stunning Purbeck hills, there are stations ideally located to explore this unique and historic area. You can even take charge of a train by taking one of their Driving Experience courses! This is one of the best family days out in Dorset.

Adventure Wonderland

At Adventure Wonderland there are fantastic rides and attractions throughout the park. Let your kids run free in the Wild Thing which is a huge indoor soft play centre!

There is also the fabulous entertainments team with Alice, The Mad Hatter and Mr Rabbit! They provide hours of fun and entertainment and are primarily aimed at children up to about 11 years old.

Tank Museum

If you are into BIG machines then a visit to the world renowned Tank Museum in Bovington is a must. The exhibitions tell the story of armoured warfare from World War One to the present day. As you explore the Museum’s six large halls you will come face to face with vehicles that have seen action in all the major wars of the 20th Century and hear first-hand accounts from those who fought in them.

This unique collection of over 300 vehicles is regarded as the best in the world and includes the world’s first ever tank – Little Willie, the feared German Tiger tank and the modern Challenger 2.

Dorset County Museum

If you want to delve into the history of Dorset then there’s no better place to start than the County Museum. Located in pretty market town of Dorchester, the museum offers a fascinating insight into the lives of the people and creatures who used to inhabit this part of the world.

From Thomas Hardy’s writing study to a huge fossil of a prehistoric marine reptile, this place has a lot to see. The Museum has an array of fascinating galleries, dealing with a wide range of subjects from the natural sciences and geology to art, history and literature. The galleries include many video displays, interactive exhibits and activity carts for children.

Dorset Waterpark

Dorset Waterpark is a wet and wild Woodland Waterpark set in the stunning surrounding of the Purbeck countryside.

This aqua-based, fully lifeguarded obstacle course is perfect for any weather – you don’t have to worry about rain if you’re planning on getting drenched anyway! All of this is makes this waterpark one of the best family days out in Dorset.
