Kingston Lacy is an extravagant manor house in rural Dorset, situated close to Sturminster Marshall. This lavish estate and sprawling gardens are managed by the National Trust and open to visitors throughout the year. Guests interested in history or architecture may notice that the home is built in a Venetian style. It is finished to a high standard with opulent furniture and fine art.
Some of the rooms are open to the public providing an opportunity for an up-close look at the impressive collections. Guided tours are available allowing you to learn more about the Bankes family who once resided here.
The gardens are another of the estate’s main draws, with acres of lawn and formal gardens to explore. The Japanese garden is a tranquil spot to with a huge variety of native plants, including cherry blossoms and more than 40 different types of acer on display. There is also a traditional teahouse, bamboo plants and granite lanterns.
If you choose to visit during an autumn break at South Lytchett the kitchen garden is a hive of activity as the home-grown vegetables are harvested. The impressive lawns are the perfect place to enjoy a picnic or let the kids run and play. In the summer months meadows of wildflowers are beautiful and make the perfect picture. There are 12 marked walks around the estate, allowing you to take in the huge variety of scenery on offer.
A trip to Kingston Lacy is brilliant for families with young children, especially those with vivid imaginations who like to spend time outdoors. There is a nature trail to follow through the woodland walk and an outdoor play area with climbing frame. Bikes are permitted if you’d prefer to explore by pedal power!
Kingston Lacy is just a short drive from South Lytchett Manor caravan and camping park. Combine your visit with a trip to nearby White Mill and Badbury Rings, both of which are located on the country estate.
