The ruins of Corfe Castle are perched high upon the Purbeck Hills overlooking the quaint village of Corfe. The castle has a rich and varied history, playing a number of important roles in its turbulent past. It was built more than a 1,000 years ago and has served as a royal residence, garrison and even a family home in the years since. Today, the ruins are owned by the National Trust and open for visitors to explore.

There’s something quite magical about the castle ruins, particularly on a blustery autumn day. As you walk around the impressive site you are transported to another era and can easily imagine what it would have been like to be here during medieval times. From the top you’ll be treated to spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and the steam train that passes by. Corfe Castle is a popular haunt for photographers due to the way it dominates the surrounding landscape.

Information and audio boards are dotted at key locations around the site detailing the castles history. There are also trails for children to follow and dressing up opportunities. During the school holidays there are often events and other activities taking place. These include re-enactments, falconry displays and carol services over the Christmas period.

Eat and drink

There’s a tea room should you need something to eat or drink during your visit. There’s also plenty of green space to sit and enjoy a picnic if the weathers playing ball! The National Trust gift shop is located at the foot of the castle with plenty of souvenirs on offer to commemorate your visit.

Getting to Corfe Castle

There are numerous ways you can get to Corfe Castle – it’s well connected with walking and cycling routes. There’s a National Trust car park with other pay and display car parks nearby. Of course, you could also park in Swanage and arrive via the historic Swanage steam railway.
