Swanage Railway

Attractions

Step back in time with a trip on the historic Swanage railway. Explore the beauty of the Isle of Purbeck on a heritage steam train and marvel at the beautiful views as you make your way along the 6-mile route.

Join the train in the picturesque seaside town of Swanage and continue to Norden station, passing the spectacular ruins of Corfe Castle along the way. From the windows you can admire the stunning Dorset countryside as you trundle along at a leisurely pace.

Single and return journeys are available to purchase and the train stops at Herston Halt, Harman’s Cross, and Corfe station, which form part of the Old Purbeck Branch Line. The trip takes around 40 minutes each way.

Steam engines

There are 5 heritage steam engines on the line that are regularly changed so visitors are likely to experience something new on every treat. At different times of year there are also visiting carriages, which have recently included the famed Flying Scotsman.

Steam gala events

The passionate volunteers at Swanage railway host a number of events throughout the year. These attract rail enthusiasts as well as families looking for a unique day out in Dorset. Christmas is a particularly busy time of year, with a special Santa service aimed at younger children. There are regular lunch and evening dining services as well as gala weekends and rallies.

Timetable

Swanage Railway has services running every day in between April and October and during February half term. At busier times of year such as the summer break there are 2 engines on the line at the same time. Out of season the service only runs at weekends.
