White Mill

Attractions

White Mill is an 18th century corn mill set on the banks of the River Stour. It makes up part of the Kingston Lacy Estate and offers spectacular views of the Dorset countryside. The impressive building underwent extensive refurbishments in 1994 thanks to investment from the National Trust. The original machinery has been restored to its former glory although too delicate to operate.

During a visit you are free to explore the mill at your leisure but we recommend taking one of the guided tours, which offer the chance to hear more of the mill’s history. The friendly and knowledgeable guides share interesting facts about the mill itself as well as interesting stories about the families that once worked there. Whilst much of the machinery is non-operational, there are replica models that show how the corn was ground. There are model rats hidden around the building for children to find and count!

Perfect picnic spot

Once you’ve finished exploring the mill make sure you take some time to admire the surrounding countryside. Pack a picnic and sit next to the river and watch as the birdlife comes and goes. If you’re lucky you might catch a glimpse of kingfisher or one of the elusive otters that calls the bank home. It’s a popular spot for nature and landscape photographers who often arrive early to capture the lingering fog on the water as dawn breaks.

After you’ve refuelled, cross the picturesque White Bridge – the oldest bridge in Dorset, and enjoy a leisurely afternoon stroll. There are a number of walks nearby, but we highly recommend the 4-mile circular route.

Getting to White Mill

White Mill is located in Sturminster Marshall, a delightful village in a rural setting. There is parking onsite and a small fee is charged to enter the mill. Please note, White Mill is only open weekends and bank holidays Easter to October. There are no toilets or eating facilities on site.
