Moreton

Places To Visit

Moreton is one of Dorset’s hidden gems and a must visit if you’re looking for beautiful walks and a riverside setting. It’s an idyllic spot to spend a couple of relaxing hours, whilst younger members of the family paddle in the ford. Moreton is a haven for dog walkers and great if you want to take your four-legged friend for a refreshing dip in the river. Despite its small size, Moreton has plenty to offer visitors including a historic church, café, and walled gardens. It’s a great spot whatever the season!

River Frome

The River Frome passes through the village and there’s a small pedestrian bridge that spans the ford. On a summers day you will find lots of families picnicking here whilst the children splash and play in the river. Pack your water shoes and net if you’re hoping to catch a minnow! Don’t worry if you forget, one of the kind residents has as selection to borrow on their doorstep!

If you’ve got time to spare cross the river and follow the path further into the heathland. You’ll pass beautiful forest on both sides and can join a number of walking and cycling trails. Sometimes horse riders ride their horses through the river here which is a beautiful site not to be missed!

St Nicholas Church

The church is full of character and makes a pretty picture in the rural setting. The main highlight of this beautiful building are the engraved windows, which depict scenes including butterflies, trees and flowers. The glass was installed to replaced dull panels and uninspiring panels that were hastily fitted following a bombing in the Second World War. They were designed by Sir Laurence Whistler and took over 30 years to complete.

Lawrence of Arabia

T.E Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) lived nearby and was laid to rest in Moreton cemetery. There is a 7-mile circular walk in memory of the famed writer, which begins in the village and takes you to Woodland Trust’s Moreton Plantation and the Tank Museum before turning back to the village. The Lawrence of Arabia trail encompasses a range of habitats including woodland, heathland and of course the River Frome. It takes roughly four hours to complete and much of the route is well surfaced.

Walled Gardens

Explore 5 acres of formal gardens at Moreton Walled Gardens. Take a leisurely stroll through the different areas as you admire the seasonal flowers. There’s a wide selection of native plants and trees on display so you’ll want to pack your camera. There’s also a café serving a delicious menu as well as a small area selling gifts and plants.
